Director’s Blog Autism is always surprising. Earlier today, the CDC released new numbers from their ongoing surveillance of autism prevalence, the Autism and Developmental Disability Monitoring (ADDM) Network . What was once considered a rare disorder is now reported as affecting 1 in 88 children, 1 in 54 boys
In the above article, the prevalence rate of 7.7% represented criteria A past-year anxiety disorder symptoms and the true weighted prevalence rate for any past-year anxiety disorder was actually 3.4% (95% confidence interval, 2.91–3.85). Taking into account this change, any anxiety disorder was no longer significantly associated with cataracts in Table 2, and 3 or more physical health conditions (instead of 2) were significantly associated with any past-year anxiety disorder in Table 3. All other significant relationships and trends remained the same.
Abstract: Objective: This study sought to examine the prevalence of skin picking disorder (SPD) in a university sample and assess associated physical and mental health correlates. Methods: A 54-item anonymous, voluntary survey was distributed via random email generation to a sample of 6000 university students. Current psychological and physical status was assessed, along with academic performance. Positive screens for SPD were determined based upon individuals meeting full proposed DSM-V criteria. Results: A total of 1916 participants (31.9%; mean age 22.7±5.1; 58.1% female) responded and were included in the analysis.
Abstract: Objective: The increased risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) in individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder has been documented. No study examined MetS in patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), despite the fact that a great proportion of them are treated with antipsychotic addition.

Importance Adverse perinatal circumstances have been associated with increased risk for autism in offspring. Women exposed to childhood abuse experience more adverse perinatal circumstances than women unexposed, but whether maternal abuse is associated with autism in offspring is unknown. Objectives To determine whether maternal exposure to childhood abuse is associated with risk for autism in offspring and whether possible increased risk is accounted for by a higher prevalence of adverse perinatal circumstances among abused women, including toxemia, low birth weight, gestational diabetes, previous induced abortion, intimate partner abuse, pregnancy length shorter than 37 weeks, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor use, and alcohol use and smoking during pregnancy.

Abstract: Objective: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are undergoing maintenance hemodialysis have a higher prevalence of depression than the general population. The underlying cause of this association is unknown, but may be related to accumulation of uremic toxins. Little is known about the association of accumulation of uremic toxins and depression in hemodialysis patients.Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 209 CKD patients from a single institution to evaluate the associations of a soluble small uremic toxin (urea), a soluble large uremic toxin (?2 microglobulin) and two protein-bound uremic toxins [total p-cresol sulfate (PCS) and indoxyl sulfate (IS)] with the presence of depression. Results: A total of 47 patients (22.4%) had depression.
