Director’s Blog This is the time of March Madness, Daylight Savings Time, and what Emily Dickinson famously called the “month of expectation.” March is also Brain Awareness Month, an annual celebration with school visits, community lectures, and lab tours to introduce the public to the mind-blowing world of neuroscience. A list of Brain Awareness events can be found at http://www.dana.org/brainweek where you will also find that March 10 -16 is the peak for related public events around the world. Since NIMH began focusing on mental disorders as brain disorders nearly two decades ago, educating people about the brain has been a priority for us.
Director’s Blog In another week or so, I will have been director of NIMH for ten years. This is longer than any previous director dating back to the inaugural director, Bob Felix, who served from 1949 to1964. In leadership, longevity is not necessarily a virtue but it does guarantee perspective
Importance Adverse perinatal circumstances have been associated with increased risk for autism in offspring. Women exposed to childhood abuse experience more adverse perinatal circumstances than women unexposed, but whether maternal abuse is associated with autism in offspring is unknown. Objectives To determine whether maternal exposure to childhood abuse is associated with risk for autism in offspring and whether possible increased risk is accounted for by a higher prevalence of adverse perinatal circumstances among abused women, including toxemia, low birth weight, gestational diabetes, previous induced abortion, intimate partner abuse, pregnancy length shorter than 37 weeks, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor use, and alcohol use and smoking during pregnancy.
Importance Advancing paternal age has been linked to autism. Objective To further expand knowledge about the association between paternal age and autism by studying the effect of grandfathers’ age on childhood autism. Design Population-based, multigenerational, case-control study.
Abstract: Objective: The objective was to determine the impact of stimulant use on antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis C patients in an integrated hepatitis clinic. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 449 consecutive patients seen in an integrated hepatitis clinic that included co-located mental health clinicians was performed. Psychiatric measures included drug use questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption questions (AUDIT-C), urine drug screen and antiviral treatment outcomes. Patients with stimulant use were compared to patients with no drug use, other drug users and an unknown drug use group using ?2 and analysis of variance tests. Results: Over 15% of hepatitis C patients presenting to the clinic were using stimulants

Unfortunately, few studies have evaluated information about mental health comorbidities and psychosocial stressors which may contribute to physician suicide.
